Win One for the Zipper

The late John McKay used to put football in perspective by saying that millions of people in China didn’t know or care about the sport. Former UCLA Coach Pepper Rodgers has a more personal story.

The morning after his Bruin team lost the 1973 game, 23-13, Rodgers went down to a drug store near his home in Westlake Village to buy a newspaper. He noticed another customer staring at him.

“I figure this guy is going to come over and tell me what we did wrong or what we should have done better,” Rodgers recalled.

Sure enough, after a few minutes, the man walked over and Rodgers braced himself. But it wasn’t football the guy wanted to talk about.
