Prime Minister Patrick Manning dissolved Parliament and announced that Trinidad and Tobago would hold its third election in as many years.
Manning agreed to new elections within six months after the nation’s two main political parties failed to select a speaker of the lower house, a move that has kept Parliament from meeting for months.
An election in December heightened tensions: Most ethnic East Indians backed former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday and most voters of African descent supported Manning.
