Rediscovered Soul Man

A month ago I had never heard of Solomon Burke (“His Legacy on the Line,” by Robert Hilburn,” Aug. 11). Then a friend couldn’t stop talking about him, and KCRW started playing tracks from the new record and I loved it. I was interested to see how he would do at the House of Blues show, and, quite honestly, I was blown away. He has that skill of drawing in the crowd in a way that so many younger performers just never achieve. What was more amazing was the fact that he commanded such attention while sitting for the entire performance.
I was so absorbed I didn’t notice that he focused more on the oldies. I was just happy to be in this wonderful talent’s presence. So I do have to disagree with Hilburn that a new fan brought in by his new record may have been disappointed by the show. I think that new and old fans alike enjoyed it immensely.

I was thrilled to see Solomon Burke on the Aug. 11 cover. It’s about time. As a musician who has had the pleasure of working with him on a few occasions, I have to add that he is also one of the nicest, kindest entertainers I have ever met. I’m glad he is finally getting his due.
