American Talib Trial May Be in Mid-November

John Walker Lindh’s trial should begin no earlier than mid-November, the government and defense said in Alexandria in a rare agreement on the eve of the arraignment for the young American who fought with the Taliban.
The defense said it would need time to conduct overseas investigations, handle classified information, argue for suppression of evidence and allow the effects of prejudicial publicity to fade.
Federal prosecutors said they disagreed with a delay because of publicity but accepted the other reasons for a November date.
The proposed timetable, in an unusual written motion signed by both sides, will be discussed today at Lindh’s arraignment before U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III.
