Mom Gets Year in Jail for Abducting Children

A woman who said she abducted her children to protect them from her ex-husband, a convicted sex offender, was sentenced Friday to a year in jail.
Debra Schmidt, who was convicted last month of felony child abduction, also was ordered to pay $44,000 in restitution and attorney’s fees to the children’s father, Manuel Saavedra, and to have the two children returned to California within 120 days.
Saavedra, 44, pleaded guilty in 1992 to lewd conduct with his 13-year-old niece. After completing a sex offender program, a counselor deemed he posed no risk to children if he did not drink alcohol.
