A 14-year-old boy suffered facial injuries Friday when a “safe and sane” firework exploded near his head while he was throwing it, a fire spokesman said.
The teen, whose name was not released, was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana with first- and second-degree burns and facial cuts, said Capt. Randy Black of the Santa Ana Fire Department.
The teen was playing with fireworks in the 1300 block of Standard Street about 1 p.m., Black said. He was injured by a Piccolo Pete modified to fly, Black said.
