COLUMBIA, Mo. — Missouri officials Monday charged a former nurse at a veterans hospital with killing 10 patients there in 1992.
Boone County prosecutor Kevin Crane said Richard Williams was arrested in St. Louis and was being held in the county jail at Columbia.
As many as 40 suspicious deaths at the hospital in 1992 had been under investigation for years.
The investigation conducted by agents of the Department of Veterans Affairs, assisted by the FBI, led to evidence explaining the cause of 10 deaths, Crane said.
“The cause of the deaths, together with the facts surrounding them, enabled this prosecution to proceed,” he added.
Crane said Williams was charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder, but he did not comment on what the motive might have been.
The dead were patients at Harry Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia.
