Wine of the Week

I’ve found my summer aperitif.
Winemaker John Alban spearheaded California vintners’ interest in Rhone varietals. In fact, his winery, in the Edna Valley near Paso Robles, was the first in California devoted entirely to Rhone grape varieties such as Viognier.
Alban’s Viogniers are consistently excellent, but the current release is exceptional. With its scent of orange blossoms and violets and a slight bitterness in the finish that balances the ripe, lush fruit, it’s a terrific white wine for the price, one that I’ll be drinking with pleasure all summer. Serve it well chilled.
About $16. Widely available at fine wine shops and retailers. If you can’t find it, have your local wine shop contact the distributor, Angeles Wine Agency, at (818) 764-2221.
