Dwight Dumais of Ventura Buena High has been following in his brothers’ footsteps since he was old enough to walk. But even they never won Southern Section Division I diving titles as freshmen.
Dumais scored 591.75 points and defeated defending champion Michael Hilde of Laguna Hills (547.80) and Ryan Rincon of Huntington Beach Marina (540.05) in an 11-dive final at Marguerite Recreation Center. Justin Dumais won section titles in 1995-96, Troy won in 1997-98 and Brice in 1999.
Dana Hills junior Joey Brown won the girls’ title with 520.60 points, edging Leanne Dumais of Buena, who scored 516.10.
In baseball:
Valencia 18, Canyon Country Canyon 5--John Porter had three hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in five runs, and Jared Clark added three hits and a three-run homer to help No. 18 Valencia (21-4, 11-3) clinch a share of its first Foothill League championship.
The teams meet again Friday at Canyon (19-5, 10-4).
Woodbridge 3, Newport Harbor 0--Mike Peck (8-1) pitched a perfect game, striking out 15, to lead Woodbridge (12-3, 17-7) to a Sea View League victory over visiting Newport Harbor.
Peck struck out the first six batters and had another streak of seven strikeouts from the end of the fourth inning through the sixth.
In boys’ tennis:
Pacific Coast League finals--Aaron Yovan of Irvine University defeated Irvine Northwood’s Andrew Cho, 6-4, 6-2, to win his second consecutive boys’ singles final at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach. The title came in the absence of top-seeded Cameron Ball, who did not play because of an inner-ear infection.
