Feeling Generous at Del Mar
Del Mar, with seven days of racing left on its calendar, will run the $100,000 Generous Portion, a six-furlong contest for 2-year-old fillies bred in California, for the 10th time today.
Trainers Bob Baffert and John Sadler have won the race and both have representatives in the field of 11.
Baffert, who won with Fiscal Year in 1997, is scheduled to send out Servaline, a $2-million yearling purchase who broke her maiden in her third start on Aug. 16, and Small Town Girl, who has yet to win in five starts and who ran only six days ago.
Sadler, who won with One More Angel in 1996, will try again with the longshot Madam General. The gray daughter of General Meeting was fourth at 43-1 in her debut Aug. 16, beaten by 3 1/2 lengths by Servaline.
The filly to beat might be Hollywood Honey. Owned by a partnership and trained by Wesley Ward, the daughter of Distinctive Cat will be making her first start since she won a two-furlong race at Santa Anita on March 21. She completed the quarter mile in 21 2/5 seconds while winning by 3 1/2 lengths.
Tyler Baze will ride Hollywood Honey and it will be interesting to see if she can carry her speed an additional half-mile around a turn.
