Diplomat Says U.S. Will Rejoin UNESCO

The United States will rejoin UNESCO, 18 years after it left to protest alleged mismanagement and overly political policies, a diplomat at the United Nations said.
President Bush is expected to make the announcement in his speech to the General Assembly today, the diplomat said.
The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was created in 1946 to fight intolerance and racism. The U.S. pulled out in 1984, with then-Secretary of State George P. Shultz saying the agency had strayed from its professed purposes.
