Fourteen police officers were hurt and at least 445 people were arrested in Chile’s capital after a night of demonstrations marking the 29th anniversary of the coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
The anniversary Wednesday passed without violence. But protests erupted overnight in Santiago. Demonstrators burned tires, and police moved in with water cannons and tear gas. Protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails.
More than 3,000 people were killed for political reasons during Pinochet’s rule.
