Oscar-nominated actor Nick Nolte will be arraigned Oct. 28 on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence after he was stopped for driving erratically on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, authorities said Thursday.
Nolte, 61, may also be charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang.
Authorities “are evaluating the case to see if they will file an additional charge of being under the influence of a narcotic,” Tang said. “It could be either the alcohol or drug charge or a combination of both.”
Known for his Academy Award-nominated roles in “Affliction” and “The Prince of Tides,” Nolte was driving south on PCH near Kanan Dume Road about 12:10 p.m. Wednesday when CHP officers conducting an unrelated traffic stop noticed the actor’s Mercedes-Benz cutting off other cars, swerving and crossing into a northbound lane, Tang said.
The officers who pulled Nolte over said he appeared to be disoriented and drooling, with drooping eyes, Tang said.
Nolte failed a field sobriety test, Tang said, although he would not discuss the actor’s blood-alcohol level or what controlled substance he may have been using at the time of the arrest. Tang added that no drugs were found on Nolte or in his car.
Nolte was released on $2,500 bail Wednesday night.
