Vons Pleads No Contest to Mislabeled Chicken

The Vons grocery store company faces more than $2,000 in criminal fines after pleading no contest to selling packaged chicken that weighed less than the labels indicated at two Ventura County stores. County inspectors found the mislabeled chicken Sept. 25, 2001, at the Fillmore Vons and Feb. 11 at a Vons in Ventura, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Karen Wold.
Inspectors found packages of chicken breasts that weighed one-quarter or one-third less than the labels indicated, Wold said. The chicken was being sold under the Vons label.
Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 24.
