Etcheverry’s Goal Lifts D.C. United

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Marco Etcheverry scored in first-half injury time as D.C. United defeated the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, 1-0, on Thursday night.
Etcheverry scored on a free kick just outside the penalty area.
The MetroStars (11-13-2), tied for the Eastern Conference lead, need a victory to clinch a playoff spot. United (8-13-5) trails Chicago by five points for the last spot.
