* Tyson Foods Inc., the world’s largest meat processor, was fined $436,000 in the asphyxiation death of a worker at a Texarkana, Ark., plant. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued the citations after investigating the Oct. 10 death of Jason Edward Kelly, 31, at the company’s River Valley animal feed plant.
* UnumProvident Corp., which one year ago fired Harold Chandler as president and chief executive to restore investor confidence, has agreed to increase his severance package to $20.2 million to settle a lawsuit. UnumProvident is the nation’s largest disability insurer.
* Yahoo Inc. of Sunnyvale, Calif., said Chairman and Chief Executive Terry Semel made $25.4 million in 2003 by exercising options granted in prior years. His salary rose 33% to $600,000.
* A former Goldman Sachs & Co. economist, John Youngdahl, 44, was sentenced to nearly three years in prison for relaying an insider bond tip that allowed the firm to make millions of dollars in tainted profit.
* Cingular Wireless, the mobile-phone carrier that is buying rival AT&T; Wireless Services Inc., said it completed the $1.4-billion purchase of 34 airwave licenses from NextWave Telecom Inc.
* Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to spend as much as $12 billion in its current fiscal year as part of an expansion plan that includes the opening of 230 to 240 Supercenter stores.
