Obscene Language

Re “White House Backs Stiffer Fines for Indecent TV, Radio,” Jan. 29: The Bush administration wants to increase fines tenfold for “obscene” words said on radio or television. If someone doesn’t want to hear certain words, he or she can turn off the radio or television. I don’t think it is the government’s job to define what is obscene. To me the most obscene phrase in the English language is “Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft.” But I would never try to stop people from saying it.
