Republican Positions on Immigration

Re “State GOP Haunted by Ghost of Prop. 187,” Feb. 21: There are several points that should be considered. First, Proposition 187 had a 60% affirmative vote. Second, it affected only illegal immigrants. Finally, the new petition being circulated does not affect the schooling of illegal immigrants and calls for enforcing existing laws that deny benefits to those illegally in the country.
If the Republican Party is afraid that it will lose voters by advocating the enforcement of laws on illegal immigration, then something is very wrong. We may be a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of laws, and selective enforcement is against the rule of law under our constitutional form of government.

Re “Rifts Show at State GOP Event,” Feb. 22: There doesn’t seem to be a cudgel big enough to whack common sense into the media’s “chattering classes.” The “Latino vote” that is being romanced by both parties is influenced far more by overcrowded schools and hospital emergency rooms than by sweet nothings whispered into their ears.

I am 52 years old and a lifelong Democrat, but I will support Republican Howard Kaloogian in his bid for U.S. Senate from California.
Someone has to step up to the plate, as illegal immigration is out of control and no politician other than state Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) will touch it.
