Mona Hatoum, a Palestinian artist living in London, won the 2004 Sonning Prize on Wednesday, organizers said.
The biannual prize, which includes $167,000, has been awarded since 1950 by the University of Copenhagen in honor of Danish writer Carl Johan Sonning, who died in 1937. It goes to someone who’s worked to forward and explore European culture.
Hatoum was cited for “being one of those who has found the most concise artistic expression for the ‘new Europeans’ ’ existential experience on unstable grounds between several cultures,” the university said in a statement.
Hatoum’s art work, including sculpture and photography, have been exhibited worldwide. Her installation, “The Entire World as a Foreign Land,” was the inaugural exhibition for the launch of the Tate Britain art gallery in 2000.
