Twelve suspected illegal immigrants were injured when the truck they were in rolled over while trying to evade a Border Patrol vehicle, officials said Tuesday.
The immigrants from Mexico were riding early Monday in a Ford pickup that was traveling along a remote road near Niland, which is near the southeastern edge of the Salton Sea, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver made a U-turn after spotting a Border Patrol vehicle in front of him. Passengers said the driver turned off the headlights and drove off the road into the open desert. As he tried to return to the road, he lost control of the truck, which rolled over onto its roof.
