A 38-year-old bicyclist was shot and killed by Orange police Friday after threatening several officers with a knife, authorities said.
Investigators did not release his name, pending notification of his relatives.
The incident began about 6:15 p.m. in front of a doughnut shop at the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Hewes Street, said Sgt. Dave Hill, a spokesman for the Orange Police Department. An officer had stopped the bicyclist because he appeared to be drunk, Hill said.
The man got off his bike, Hill said, indicated that he had a knife, held it to his own throat, then pointed it at the officer and walked toward him. The officer fired, Hill said, but the bicyclist kept coming. Then two other officers who had arrived also fired, the spokesman said.
The man was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident is under investigation.
