An off-duty police officer shot and killed a gunman believed to have injured two men outside a business in Whittier early Saturday, authorities said.
The Los Angeles Police Department officer was waiting in a drive-through line at a Carl’s Jr. restaurant around 2 a.m. when he heard several gunshots. A man holding a revolver then ran past the officer’s vehicle on the 10400 block of Whittier Boulevard, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Luis Castro.
The officer got out, identified himself and ordered the gunman to stop, officials said. The man stopped and turned toward the officer, but fearing for his safety, the officer fired his gun, striking the man in the upper torso. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, Castro said.
The gunman is believed to have shot two men outside a nearby business. The victims were being treated at a local hospital.
