An inmate died less than two hours after he was subdued with pepper spray after allegedly assaulting an officer at the California Men’s Colony.
State prison officials and sheriff’s detectives were investigating Friday’s death of Anthony Brown, 46. Prison spokeswoman Lt. Shelly Thompson said Monday that no prison staff members were suspected of causing Brown’s death.
Thompson said Brown hit an officer on the forehead with his elbow or fist, causing bruising and swelling above the officer’s right eye.
When Brown then moved toward another officer, pepper spray was used to subdue him. Brown was taken to the prison hospital, where staff members noticed he had stopped breathing.
