Hong Kong Holds Legislative Elections

After a campaign marred by scandal and alleged intimidation, the people of Hong Kong were voting today in legislative elections that could give democracy proponents more clout than they have held since China reclaimed the territory from Britain in July 1997.
Heavy turnout was expected. Analysts predicted democracy supporters would claim about 26 of the Legislative Council’s 60 seats, compared with 22 now, which could further weaken the unpopular government of Beijing-backed Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.
