PARIS — A fire roared through a central Paris hotel early today, killing at least 13 people and injuring at least 57, fire officials said. A witness said he saw three guests leap from windows to escape the flames.
The fire occurred in the one-star Paris Opera hotel in the capital’s 9th district, an area popular with tourists.
Fire services spokesman Laurent Vibert said many of the guests were African. The witness said he spoke to Australians, Canadians and Tunisians who escaped the fire.
The injured were treated and the dead temporarily placed in the Galaries Lafayette department store.
Nearly all of the six floors of the hotel were blackened inside.
The hotel owner believes the fire broke out in a second-floor breakfast room, Vibert said.
A woman who works in a nearby hotel brought out a ladder, the witness said, and together they used it to rescue a girl.
