Theft Victims Seek to Get Property Back

Ventura County sheriff’s officials received more than 300 calls and e-mails from people attempting to locate stolen construction equipment after authorities announced the arrest this week of nearly two dozen people suspected in a nationwide theft ring.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Don Aguilar said the department had received more than 200 calls and at least 100 e-mails inquiring about more than 25,000 pieces of equipment that had been recovered.
Officials estimate the value of the property, including nail guns, power saws, generators and soil compactors, at $3.5 million.
Authorities say the suspected thieves, many of whom are Los Angeles County residents, used welding torches to cut through locks and steel storage containers to get to the equipment on construction sites.
Officials estimate it will take 60 days to locate all the property owners, because more than 215 contractors, landscapers and equipment rental companies were robbed in nine states.
