Babcock, Red Wings Reach Deal

Former Mighty Duck Coach Mike Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a multiyear deal, with the announcement expected to come Friday, a source familiar with the negotiations said Wednesday.
Babcock, 42, was the Ducks’ coach the last two seasons, leading them to the 2003 Stanley Cup finals. His contract expired June 30, and Brian Burke, the team’s new general manager, offered Babcock a one-year contract to remain with the team.
Babcock was granted a week to make a decision, and decided not to return after the Red Wings showed interest. He replaces Dave Lewis, who was not offered a contract by the Red Wings.
