From Times staff and wire reports
A 33-hour tug-of-war between South Korean and Japanese coast guards ended today after top officials intervened.
The standoff started when a South Korean eel-fishing boat strayed into Japanese waters in the Sea of Japan, then tried to return.
Coast guard vessels of both nations lashed themselves to either side of the 77-ton boat.
Japan agreed to release the boat in return for a South Korean promise to investigate the owner for fishing in Japanese waters.
