FEAT OF THE WEEK

After being dropped off at 89 degrees north latitude on pack ice, Kevin DeVries and his group embarked on an 80-mile trek to the geographic North Pole. They skied up to 10 hours a day for 10 days, crossing three-story ridges and vast ice fields. They set up camp each night on unmarked and shifting ice with wind chills well below -50 F. “The North Pole is a magical place,” says DeVries, of Pinckney, Mich. “It has captured the imagination of countless generations.” DeVries hopes to conquer Antarctica’s highest mountain, Mt. Vinson, as well as Mt. Everest, by next year.
