COLUMBUS, Ohio — Francisco Palencia scored in the 59th minute to lead Chivas USA over the Columbus Crew, 1-0, Saturday night in a Major League Soccer game.
The Crew (10-15-4) almost tied the score in the 71st minute, but John Wolyniec could not convert a rebound attempt.
Chivas USA (4-21-5) won for the first time since beating New England on July 22. The loss eliminated Columbus from postseason contention.
Columbus’ first quality chance came in the ninth minute, when Edson Buddle redirected Chad Marshall’s header into the arms of Sergio Garcia.
The Crew had a goal called back in the 16th minute when Knox Cameron redirected Martino’s free kick from an offside position.
