Harbor Area, Ballona Marshes to Be Restored

From Times Staff Reports
The Port of Los Angeles will earmark $31 million to buy and restore coastal marshes near the harbor and the Ballona wetlands, the Harbor Commission decided Tuesday.
The action represents a significant change in focus for the port, which in the past has invested nearly $100 million in wetlands in Orange and San Diego counties but not in Los Angeles County.
When the port expands into open water, it must offset the loss of bird and fish habitat by restoring coastal wetlands.
