‘Scotch geeks’ and wine connoisseurs

A review of a book about whiskey [“Scotch’s History, Distilled,” Sept. 14] referred to people who know something about Scotch whiskey as “Scotch geeks.”
It isn’t really clear why people who know about wine are “connoisseurs” and people who know about whiskey are “geeks.” Maybe snobbery at The Times?
