Brigade to Deploy to Iraq After Delay

WASHINGTON — The 2nd Brigade of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, whose Iraq deployment was delayed in May, is scheduled to go this summer, a defense official said Wednesday.
The delay had triggered speculation about a possible cut in the estimated 132,000 troops in Iraq. Army Gen. George W. Casey last year said he expected reductions this spring and summer if political and security progress continued.
The Pentagon said last week that the average number of attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces each week between February and May was the highest for any such period since June 2004.
