6.2 Earthquake Shakes Swaths of South, West

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake rattled southern Japan early today and left at least five people injured, but there was no danger of a tsunami, officials said.
The quake occurred about 5 a.m., about 90 miles underground in Oita prefecture on the island of Kyushu. It shook wide areas of southern and western Japan, the government’s meteorological agency said.
