Gangs Celebrate as Army Exits Rio Slums

The Brazilian army ended its 10-day occupation of Rio de Janeiro slums without recovering a batch of stolen weapons, but the military denied failure and carried out targeted raids.
As its troops pulled out, drug gangs shot into the air and set off fireworks in celebration.
The army carried out two raids in two shantytowns of the crime-ridden city looking for 10 assault rifles and a pistol stolen from a military base this month -- the act that triggered the military’s full-blown incursion into the slums.
