Mountain Thunderstorms Bring Hail and Mudslides

Mountain thunderstorms Saturday brought mudslides to Coachella Valley roads and nickel-size hailstones to a remote part of southern San Diego County, the National Weather Service said.
The early evening storm, which lasted about an hour and a half, produced more than an inch of rain per hour in some areas, said Steve Vanderburg of the weather service.
Slides piled mud as high as 2 feet over roads in the Pinon Pines area, where one gauge measured 1.3 inches of rain in about 45 minutes, officials said.
Several vehicles along the Pines to Palms Highway -- State Route 74 -- became stuck in the mud. Crews worked Saturday night to clear the roads.
Hail briefly pounded the mountains in southern San Diego County, Vanderburg said. No injuries were reported.
