Powell powers UCSB

James Powell, a native of Pomona and graduate of Glendora High, scored a career-high 24 points to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 75-56 victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday night.
The Gauchos (3-1) made 11 of 22 three-point shots, with Powell making four of seven, and shot 52.4% overall.
Larry Gordon led Pomona, a Division II school, (0-1) with 22 points.
Powell scored eight points during an early, nine-minute spree in which UCSB made seven of eight three-pointers, taking a 28-15 lead. The margin grew to 39-22 by halftime.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 83, Utah State 69 -- The Mustangs (2-2) had four players in double figures in a victory over the visiting Aggies (2-2), a former Big West Conference foe.
Titus Shelton and Lorenzo Keeler each had 19 points to lead Cal Poly.
Eastern Washington 59, UC Riverside 51 -- Kellen Williams scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Eagles (1-2) used a 26-6 burst to start the second half and pull away from the Highlanders (0-3) at Cheney, Wash.
Larry Cunningham scored 20 points for UC Riverside.
