* at Boston 5, Minnesota 2: Daisuke Matsuzaka won for only the second time since early August, David Ortiz homered for the fourth time in seven games, and the Red Sox clinched their first East Division title in 12 years. Since beating Seattle on Aug. 4, Matsuzaka was 1-4 with a 7.09 earned-run average in eight starts. The Red Sox announced before the game that rookie right-hander Clay Buchholz won’t pitch for the rest of the season and will skip the postseason because of shoulder fatigue.

* at Chicago 5, Detroit 2: Paul Konerko hit a three-run home run, and Jim Thome hit his 506th career homer to lead the White Sox. The Tigers’ Magglio Ordonez, who is battling Ichiro Suzuki for the league batting title, was two for four with an RBI. He raised his major league-leading batting average to .360.

* at Toronto 5, Tampa Bay 4: Carlos Pena hit his 45th home run, giving him a club-record 12 homers in September, but it wasn’t enough for the Devil Rays..

* Cleveland 5, at Kansas City 2: C.C. Sabathia (19-7) picked up the 100th victory of his career, and the Indians wrapped up home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.

* at Seattle 6, Texas 4: Rookie Jeff Clement hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Adrian Beltre led off the inning with a single. Two outs later, Clement hit a 2-1 from pitch from Mike Wood for his second home run.

* at Baltimore 10, New York 9 (10 innings): Melvin Mora bunted in the winning run with two out in the 10th.

* Angels 2, at Oakland 0: John Lackey (19-9), who yielded two hits in seven innings, lowered his ERA to 3.01 to take over the league lead, just ahead of Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona (3.06) and Oakland’s Dan Haren (3.07).
