Hiker believed dead; man charged

Authorities in Atlanta said they believe a hiker who disappeared in the Chattahoochee National Forest on New Year’s Day is dead, and they charged the man who was reportedly last seen with her with kidnapping.
Gary Michael Hilton, 61, was charged in Union County with kidnapping with bodily injury in the disappearance of Meredith Emerson, 24, said a Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman. The bureau declined to say how investigators had learned of Hilton.
