Dynasties are dangerous

Re “A dynasty isn’t a democracy,” Opinion, Jan. 3

I’m glad someone else noticed this contradiction about democracy in Pakistan. The U.S. wants to promote democracy, so it picks a leader who engaged in money laundering and whose political party leadership is inherited by her family. I thought that in a democracy, the people, not outside countries, were supposed to pick their own leader, and the goal is to get rid of royalty and inherited titles. Thank you, Rosa Brooks, for questioning the political dynasties in our country, as well.

As far as I can tell, every time the U.S. has tried to pick leaders for other countries, people rebel against U.S. puppets and fundamentalist religious leaders in power. I would like to see the U.S. stick to assisting in the process rather than picking results.
