A man opened fire in a grocery store Sunday afternoon, hitting and injuring two women and taking one of them hostage before police shot him to death, authorities said.
The man shot at four people inside the Rio Ranch Market in Chino, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said.
Police said when they confronted the shooter, he was holding a gun to a woman’s head.
“One of our officers was able to get a good line of sight between him and the hostage and the shooter, and we were able to resolve the situation by the officer firing a round at the suspect,” Chino Police Lt. Al Cheatam told reporters at the scene.
One of the victims was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said. The other was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.
The shooting victim who was taken hostage was believed to be the suspect’s girlfriend who worked at the market, and the other victim was believed to be her sister, authorities said.
