Beef up safety, teachers urge
The teachers union Monday called on Los Angeles city and school officials to improve safety for students and teachers on and near campuses.
The call came after last month’s gang-related fatal shootings near schools in Glassell Park and Cypress Park. Last week, five middle-school students were wounded in an unrelated gang-linked shooting at a bus stop near a South Los Angeles campus.
The union, United Teachers Los Angeles, has made school safety an issue in current contract negotiations.
A school-district statement noted that, in the first incident, no students or teachers were harmed. It called schools among the safest places in a community.
