HD DVD offer set at Best Buy

Best Buy Co. said Wednesday that it would give $50 gift cards to customers who bought HD DVD video equipment after Toshiba Corp. abandoned the format and surrendered to Sony Corp.’s Blu-ray.
The retailer will spend $10 million on the payouts, which will go to customers who bought HD DVD players or attachments before Feb. 23. Most customers will receive the cards in the mail, Minneapolis-based Best Buy said.
Tokyo-based Toshiba said last month that it was withdrawing from the high-definition DVD market a month after Hollywood studios led by Warner Bros. Entertainment said they wouldn’t support HD DVD. Toshiba’s exit ended the home entertainment industry’s biggest format war since VHS video beat Betamax in the 1980s.
Best Buy will also give customers the option of trading in HD DVD equipment in exchange for a gift card through the company’s website.
