Teens dish about denim

Backstage before the Hurley-sponsored Walk the Walk fashion design competition at the U.S. Open of Surfing last month, we surveyed some of Southern California’s most fashion-forward teens about their post-Labor Day wardrobe choices. Not surprisingly, denim was at the top of the list, but what kind (skinny versus straight, 1980s-era acid-washed versus 1990s-era ripped grunge) was very much up for discussion.
A few of the comments:
“My friends and I are wearing a lot of capri jeans -- making them with scissors. Keeping it ugly and rough.”
-- Enrique Garcia, 17
Lincoln High School, San Diego
--
“My skinny jeans are my favorite pair of jeans. It’s all about how you wear them. I just bought a leather jacket. It’s really fitted, tight and cute -- feminine but with an edge.”
-- Mariah Stephenson, 16
Dana Hills High School, Dana Point
--
“Skinny jeans in different colors are coming in -- and ones with rips on the front.”
-- Kirra Kudla, 17
San Clemente High School graduate (headed to FIDM)
--
“I like all the high-waisted stuff, and layering tank tops with flannels with jackets -- because this is the fall and it’s like 80 degrees. I like destroyed acid-washed jeans, and skinny jeans with zippers.”
-- Maddie McKinley, 18
Huntington Beach, incoming USC freshman
--
“Skinny jeans are out. I don’t like wearing them. You have to be a stick.” (She’s wearing straight legs instead.) Fall must-haves include “a romper and a cardigan sweater.”
-- Justine Jones, 17
Fountain Valley High School

Times fashion critic Booth Moore contributed to this report.
