Just weeks after being arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine, San Bernardino County Assessor Bill Postmus resigned Friday, saying he needed time to battle his drug addiction.
In a letter to Gary Ovitt, chairman of the county Board of Supervisors, Postmus apologized for letting so many people down.
Postmus has been under a cloud since April, when his assistant was arrested and charged with six felonies, including altering and destroying official documents. A grand jury report later took Postmus to task for improperly using his office for political purposes and hiring unqualified staff.
The district attorney’s office began its own investigation of Postmus, which culminated in raids across the Inland Empire last month. One target was Postmus’ Rancho Cucamonga apartment, where on Jan. 15 investigators found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. They arrested Postmus, 37, who is now out on bail.
Ovitt said the resignation means he will suspend plans to go forward with a special investigator, “but the D.A.’s investigation is ongoing.”
Postmus will leave office Friday.
