Sun Valley, Idaho: Santa sends snow so skiers can hit the slopes earlier

Major snowstorms have blanketed EpicQuest’s 750,000 acres in the Idaho back country with 20% more snow than usual, so heli-ski operations for skiers and snowboarders opened Monday, 10 days ahead of schedule and with a deal.
The deal: The Escape package bundles two days of heli-skiing in the powder-clad mountains surrounding Sun Valley with one day of skiing at the Sun Valley Resort and four nights’ lodging there from $6,400 for two for a deluxe room (two queen beds) or $6,000 for two in a standard room with one queen bed. The package also includes lunches on ski days, a VIP cocktail reception and airport and hotel transfers.
Sun Valley Heli Ski Guides, now in its 45th year of operation, is one of the oldest heli-ski operations in the U.S. The terrain is suited for intermediate to advanced skiers.
When: Now through March 31.
Tested: I requested the Escape package for a four-night stay for two people in a deluxe room checking in Dec. 31 or Jan. 1. I initially had to leave a voicemail for EpicQuest when I called after 7:30 p.m. Central time, but I received a return call within five minutes. My dates were available. There’s good availability for this package from now until March. Total cost of the package from Dec. 31 with a checkout on Jan. 4 totaled $6,976 (including 9% tax).
