‘Stagecoach’
John Wayne starred in several “road” westerns, including John Ford’s 1939 classic “Stagecoach,” which made the Duke a superstar. He played the Ringo Kid, who gets more than he bargains for on a stagecoach trip through Indian country.
‘Red River’
In Howard Hawks’ seminal 1948 sagebrush saga “Red River,” Wayne plays a two-fisted cattle baron who clashes with his adopted son ( Montgomery Clift) during a massive cattle drive from Texas north to the Missouri railhead.
‘The Searchers’
In this 1956 Ford classic, Wayne’s Civil War veteran Ethan Edwards spends years on a journey with his nephew (Jeffrey Hunter) to find his niece ( Natalie Wood), who had been captured by the Indians on his brother’s Texas ranch.
