Brush fire destroys at least one home east of Palmdale before crews stop its spread

A wind-fed brush fire erupted near the San Gabriel Mountains east of Palmdale, forcing evacuations and destroying at least one home before a group of about 500 firefighters stopped its advance Wednesday night, officials said.
The Pine fire was sparked in vegetation near Highway 138 in Pinon Hills about 1:30 p.m. and grew to about 450 acres before firefighters managed to halt its growth around 9 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Footage captured by news helicopters showed two homes and several vehicles engulfed in flames as thick plumes of smoke rose skyward. Firefighters from Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties had achieved 15% containment as of 9 p.m., officials said.
Residents living south of Highway 138, east of Jubilee Road, west of Mountain Road and north of Tamarack Road were being ordered to evacuate in the afternoon, but those evacuation orders had been lifted by nightfall.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
