Jake Gyllenhaal got a little punchy on the set of his new movie “Nightcrawler” on Wednesday morning — and it reportedly landed him in the emergency room.
Gyllenhaal, who lost 20 pounds to play a crime reporter in the film, was deep in character when he accidentally hurt himself by hitting a mirror, People reported Thursday.
“His character was looking into a mirror during the scene and punched the mirror in anger and broke it, cutting himself so bad he had to be taken to a hospital,” a source told the mag.

The trip to the emergency reportedly included a bunch of stitches (which pales in comparison to Zac Efron’s recent self-injury).
Note that it was the character, and not the actor, who nailed the mirror. As in, don’t go thinking that Gyllenhaal was pitching a diva fit on set.
Ever the trouper, Jake returned to work after his ER visit. “Nightcrawler” is set for release next year.
