Jennifer Hudson is headed to”Smash.”
The academy award-winning actress has booked a multi-episode arc on NBC’s sophomore musical drama, the network announced, a move that may prove beneficial for both the show and its newest star.
This will mark Hudson’s first professional endeavor, aside from her Weight Watchers spokesmansnip, since her former brother-in-law was convicted of murdering her mother, brother and nephew in 2008.
As for “Smash,” massive hype around its debut led to big premiere numbers, but critical panning and waning interest helped for a sharp decline week to week.
The show has pedigree, however, thanks to stars Katherine McPhee and Megan Hilty and executive producer Steven Spielberg.
Hudson will play Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning stage actress who tangles with the players of “Smash’s” fictional musical “Bombshell,” about the life of Marilyn Monroe.
“Her character will represent someone who reached their Broadway dream but also paid a price for it,” said NBC honcho Robet Greenblatt in a statement.
During its first season, “Smash” saw guest appearances from Uma Thurman, Bernadette Peters and Nick Jonas.
